Yaya Jabbi: Death while in custody
In January 2016, Hamburg police arrested 21-year-old Gambian Yaya Jabbi in St Pauli for possession of 1.65 grams of marijuana. Despite the negligible quantity, he was held for weeks in the Hahnöfersand detention center. After four weeks, Yaya Jabbi died on the night of 18 to 19 February. The judicial authorities ruled his death a suicide. His relatives, friends and activists from the Yaya Jabbi Initiative doubt this. In 2018, they renamed a nameless traffic island at Parc Fiction Yaya Jabbi Circle in his memory and installed a memorial plaque. The Altona district office had the plaque removed immediately.
