The death of William Tonou-Mbobda at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)
On 26 April 2019, 34-year-old business administration student William Tonou-Mbobda from Cameroon died after being forcibly restrained at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). He was experiencing mental health issues and had voluntarily admitted himself to the clinic. When he refused to take medication, security at the UKE forcibly restrained him. He collapsed and died five days later. Eyewitnesses described the behavior of the security guards as brutal. An employee of the UKE reported that members of the security staff had made racist remarks beforehand. The investigation into the death of William Tonou-Mbobda was closed. The Justice For Mbobda initiative and activists from the Black Community Hamburg are calling for further clarification of the circumstances of his death.
