Neumann Group
In late 1973, the former Hamburg police cadet Hans-Joachim Neumann set up a nationwide underground organisation. It established weapons caches, firebombed a bookstore in Göttingen, and desecrated Jewish cemeteries in Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate. Neumann and other Hamburg neo-Nazis also maintained close ties with the NSDAP/AO, a US-American neo-Nazi organisation founded in 1972, and named after the Nazi Party's Development and Foreign Organisation.
Willi Wegner, a member of Neumann’s group, managed to seize eight submachine guns during a break-in at a customs barracks in Lower Saxony. Following a string of arrests, Neumann fled to South Africa. Wegner was sentenced to 39 months in prison. In 1986, he became the lead candidate for the Freiheitliche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (Free German Workers’ Party, FAP) in Hamburg and, in 2020, a member of the NPD regional executive committee.
